Ravenwood Runway is one of the top highlights of our fashion year, by far. Ever since we discovered this gem 3 years ago, we've continued the tradition of heading out to Brentwood to be amazed by what these young stars are producing. (2011,2012,2013) Sabrina Maggart is the fashion design teacher at Ravenwood and I've been told by students that she is a great inspiration to many of them and why they love to design. And boy does it show-her dedication and hard work has produced some very innovative and skilled designers. Let's take a look at a few of my favorite pieces from this year's 5th Annual Ravenwood Runway. In the first half of the show, the "Sharpest Tulle in the Shed" had one of my favorite pieces. What can I say? I'm a sucker for tulle:) There was a deep purple gown with a tull... read more

I’m a big believer that fashion is a reflection of what that society is going through at that time. Look at the 50’s for example: buttoned up, bows, high necklines, longer skirts, sweetness and innocence. Then you get in to the 60’s and women are sick and tired of not showing of their legs and being in those fit and flare dresses with little kitten heels and being told that they need to behave like ladies. So the hemlines get shorter, the silhouettes are looser and they kick off their proper heels in favor of something a little funkier. It could just be me but I think that the way trends are swinging now proves that Americans are sick and tired of being in a recession. They are ready for decadence, excessive, over the top, and intricate.  That or all anyone is rea... read more

Raw- being in a natural condition; not processed or refined. The natural talents of Nashville's unrefined artists are showcased at RAW! RAW is an independent arts organization, for artists, by artists. The RAW Directors hand-pick and spotlight local artistic talent in film, fashion, music, visual art, hair & makeup artistry, and performance art. But first, there are the local Semi-finals in each of the 54 cities where RAW runs monthly. From the front row, I was immediately swept away by Christian Siriano’s Collection, full of airy water-colored fabrics, whimsical fabrics, pastel brocades, and soft polka dots. While I do agree with fashion critics that this is his most wearable collection yet… there is still something quite dreamy about the pastel hues, intricate pearl beading and feather embellishments. Watching as each model floated down the runway with a tousled bun, flushed cheeks and dewy skin I was taken back to my childhood dreams of becoming a princess or one of the ballerinas in Swan Lake.  While the dresses where captivating the shoes were like icing on an already delicious cake. The pink metallic brogues, bow back pumps, and jeweled heels would have even made Marie Antoinette swoo... read more

St. Laurent dropped Yves, and picked up Sarah. Nashville model, Sarah Engelland, that is. While in a meeting to discuss our sponsorship of the MACS|AMAX Face Of Fall Model Competition, it was mentioned that the agency had a model walk in the St. Laurent show during Paris Fashion Week. So, of course we jumped at the chance to be able to tell this story to you, our wonderful fashion audience. Photographer: Doug Barry Around June 2012, Sarah decided to cut her bangs and attended the St. Laurent casting in New York. Apparently, the chop was the right move because after returning to Nashville, she got a call from her casting agent at One Management (while at school having lunch) to attend a second casting in Paris. How cool is that?! Photographer: Doug Barry She was origin... read more

You all know Local Honey right? Well I just moved here two months ago and I’ve already heard rave reviews; so obviously when I was asked to cover their “So Alternative” fashion show I jumped at the chance. Their show was the introduction of The Balee Collection for Tidwell and Perryman, curated by Balee Greer. The looks were mixed with pieces from Local Honey. The goal was to not only show people what they sell but how to put it together. The show opened up with a girl wearing a sheer black top with high-waisted blue jean shorts and a beenie. Photographer: Nhu Duong The tone was set. Almost every person in the show was wearing combat boots or heels so high that I definitely noticed at least one model wobble. But my oh my, what a sweet night. The gang at Local Hone... read more

Our latest Style Profile lead us to Hemline, located in the Hill Center of Green Hills. Since its opening in 2007, Hemline has been giving shoppers the best of both worlds; the shopping experience of a small boutique with the big names of a chain. Not only can you find the a BCBG skirt and Free People blouse, but a Leona dress by a local designer. That’s right. Hemline offers local designs too. The store’s eclectic mix of designers and brands leaves very little left to be desired.  We all know how difficult updating a wardrobe can be, so I wanted to create a look that was perfect for this pre-Fall season but comfortable too. I thought these cropped diamond printed pants were great for the season and were super cozy. They were such a good fit, it was actually hard to find... read more

There was a captivating look of structure in each medium. Each part was designed to flatter the vessel inside with intentional construction. Am I talking about a Frank Lloyd Wright home? No, I'm talking about Mathieu Mirano's Spring 2013 Presentation at Lincoln Center.  Mathieu Mirano's architectural eye was clearly used in the design of this collection. Each piece appeared as if it was designed specifically for the model with blueprint-like sensibility.  The blueprint quality of these designs reflected a sartorial flair. This fine tailoring is quite an achievement for this fairly new designer. Mirano's focus on shapes that fit the body to a “t” make his collection easy to take in.  He flowed with, rather tha... read more

Fanny’s House of Music might be one of Nashville’s most unique music boutiques, and by far the most charming. Nestled in East Nashville, the store is home to an array of new and vintage instruments  and, just as notably, the friendliest staff you’ll ever meet. But what really makes Fanny’s an absolute rarity is it’s in house selection of vintage clothing. Featuring finds from vintage clothing dealers; 2 of which are featured here- Anna Haferman's "The Mom and Pop Culture Shop" and Lynda Herdelin's "Pink Star Vintage." The boutique has some of the most rare and eye-catching finds I’ve ever seen. Despite the amount of limited space, there is still so much to be discovered on every rack. Working at American Apparel has definitely turned ... read more
